We have an opportunity for a Research Assistant/Associate to contribute to/make a leading contribution to a project Maximising potential of plant-based convenience foods in real-life sustainable diets.

We are seeking to recruit an ambitious, highly motivated and collaborative postdoctoral research fellow with a background in health or environmental psychology to work on a Wellcome funded project Maximising potential of plant-based convenience foods in real-life sustainable diets.

The successful applicant  will join a collaborative multidisciplinary research team from the Universities of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Oxford, bringing together expertise in sustainable diets and nutrition (Professor Macdiarmid, Aberdeen), psychology (Dr. Papies, Glasgow), food systems and climate science (Professor Pete Smith, Aberdeen and Dr Michael Clark, Oxford) and cultural policy and creative arts (Professor Ele Belfiore, Aberdeen). The applicant will work closely with the three additional postdoctoral research fellows appointed on this project.

The project will explore the use of plant-based convenience foods, such as ready meals, to achieve realistic environmentally sustainable and healthy diets. Current diets in the UK are unhealthy and contributing to environmental damage, and recommendations are to move towards plant-based diets and reduce meat consumption (‘sustainable diets’), but changing diets is notoriously difficult.

Proposed sustainable diets are often idealistic and do not consider the true cost (monetary and time), accessibility, convenience and appeal of diets in the realities of modern living.

This project will explore the use of plant-based convenience foods (e.g. ready meal) in sustainable diets, which if nutritionally adequate, healthy and appealing, with a low carbon footprint, could provide an opportunity to accelerate the transition to realistic sustainable diets.

The project will take a holistic approach to understanding acceptable sustainable diets and producing policy options and actionable climate change mitigation solutions with health co-benefits.

The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.

For appointment at Grade 7, the successful candidate will require normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
