We are seeking a Research Assistant to join Dr John McCafferty’s research team in the Department of Medicine, University of Cambridge. This post is available from October 2023, with the successful candidate focusing on research working towards the development of new antibody therapeutics against snake venom. This involves generating phage libraries from horses immunised with sub-Saharan African snakes, allowing us to select, screen and sequence antibodies with the potential to bind the venom components. The best binders will then be expressed and validated to determine whether they neutralise venom components.

This is a fixed-term position until 31/07/2025 based on Level 5 of Addenbrooke’s Hospital working closely external academic collaborators. The post requires a BSc in Biological Sciences with experience in molecular biology, cell culture, protein expression & immunology and prior experience or understanding of snake envenomation.

The candidate will be expected to support the team with multiple techniques including phage display, transient mammalian cell expression, purification & venom neutralisation assays. In addition, the post holder should perform any necessary laboratory administration & maintenance tasks associated with the project. Applicants will be expected to have good verbal and written communication skills and be able to present at scientific meetings. 

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 July 2025 in the first instance.
