Hours: 37.5 hours/week

The Head of Operations Diagnostics Accelerator will work closely with the DD of Diagnostics and Pathogen Characterisation (DPC) to deliver the different diagnostics requirements across Science Group in line with the Diagnostic Strategy primarily focusing on the rapid development of diagnostics in response to outbreaks of new and emerging pathogens as part of the Diagnostic Accelerator activity. This will require working with the other Heads of functions within the division especially those focused on related diagnostic areas and with other directorates across Science Group and with other parts of UKHSA as well as with academia, new and existing commercial contacts in partnerships and income generating projects as well as evaluating diagnostics for UKHSA, NHS, DHSC as required.

The function requires development and maintenance of staffing, expertise, and capabilities to deliver these activities as well as working with other teams in the division, across Science Group and within UKHSA. Externally the function will work with HMG, academia, diagnostic developers, FIND, CEPI, WHO, BMGF, USG and other bodies to support the development, regulatory approval, and deployment of diagnostics.  Close engagement with other leads across the Diagnostic testing arena in Science Group will be required as well as others focused on pathogen discovery, characterisation, and surveillance.

The function will also work closely with Standards, Regulatory and Quality Assurance directorate to ensure compliance with all appropriate national and international regulations.

The post holder will be involved in identification of and winning commercial opportunities for DPC as well as core activity. They will manage execution of UKHSA, commercial and HMG studies for diagnostic development and evaluation to deliver diagnostic testing capability including implementation of new assays for RIPL UKHSA and diagnostic development and testing for/with external parties and as part of 100 Day Mission preparedness.

  • This function is critical to supporting the development and evaluation of diagnostics in UK’s readiness to respond to public health emergencies by provision of scientific capabilities to support the innovation, testing and implementation of diagnostics. It will increase in size from the current headcount to enable wider engagement with industry and academia to provide benefits from collaborations and commercial income activity as set out in the Science Strategy.
  • Deputise for DD DPC as appropriate
  • Member of DPC senior management team contributing to all discussions and decision-making processes
  • Support and facilitate any organisational change as required ensuring that commercial considerations are embedded in decision making
