Project Description:

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a metabolic condition where people cannot break down the amino acid, phenylalanine, which then builds up in their blood and brain. This can lead to brain damage, amongst other health issues, if left untreated. 

As they cannot break down the amino acid phenylalanine, this has been reported to have implications for the ability to exercise, and the recovery from exercise. As people exercise with this condition, this research seeks to understand the somatology of the condition, as well as how this is impacted by exercise. Finally, interventions shall be created from this to improve the outcome of exercise and PKU, which will include using nutrition to improve the health status of individuals with PKU. 

This exciting project is a collaboration with local partners to BCU including Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Vitaflo. The successful candidate with therefore profit from the insight of academics and industry to benefit their research and future career goals. 

Anticipated Findings and Contribution to Knowledge:

It is anticipated that, off the back of this research, we would be able to create exercise and nutrition guidelines for individuals with PKU, including methods to help optimise their ability to exercise, or the recovery from exercise.

Applicant Person Specification:

Essential

  • An undergraduate degree in sport and/or health related subject
  • Experience of data collection for research projects (including dissertation)

Desirable

  • A post graduate degree in sport and/or health related subject
  • An interest in PKU

Fees and Funding

The studentships will follow Birmingham City University’s ‘PhD Classic’ Doctoral Training Grant funding model.

PhD Classic studentships consist of two elements:

  1. A tax-free stipend for living expenses at the same rate as UK Research Council funded studentships (£18,622 a year for 2023/24) for up to three years, full time.
  2. A full-time home fees studentship (£4,712 for 2023-24) for up to three years,

PhD Classic studentship opportunities are open to UK, EU and Overseas applicants. All applicants will receive the same stipend irrespective of fee status, however international fee status applicants will be required to meet the difference in fee costs from their own funds. The expected mode of study is full-time.

Please ensure you state the relevant project reference on your proposal form. All applicants are required to upload evidence of their qualifications in the relevant section of the application form and provide details of two referees, at least one being an academic reference as part of the application form.

International applicants must also provide a valid English language qualification, such as International English Language Test System (IELTS) or equivalent with an overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0.

The closing date for applications is 23.59 on Sunday 1st October 2023 for a February 2024 start.
