Background
An exciting new position for a Grade 7 Research Fellow is now open for applications within the Neuroscience, Neurotrauma and Ophthalmology Group within the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing working on a translational project investigating the pathobiology of stroke in young people. Subarachnoid haemorrhage is a devastating form of stroke associated with long term disability because of secondary brain damage. Around a quarter of adult patients are under the age of 45 and are at increased risk of developing neurodegenerative disease including dementia.
Within this post, we will aim to explore the mechanisms behind premature ageing of the brain following a haemorrhagic stroke. Using state of the art culture systems and in vivo models, we will investigate the roles of fluid dynamics and aberrations within extracellular matrix dysfunctions that lead to neurodegeneration.
This translational research will build into larger portfolio of neurodegenerative disease research. Working under PI, Assistant Professor Botfield, you will be part of a large multidisciplinary team of translational and clinical scientists.
Person Specification
- First degree in Biological Sciences and a PhD (or close to completion) in neuroscience or relevant area
- Extensive experience in histology, immunohistochemistry and microscopy
- Extensive experience in cell culture techniques
- Holder of home office personal licence and expertise in handling rats.
- Experience with in vivo models (preferably neuroscience models)
- High level analytical capability
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly
- Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
- Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
- Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
- Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
