The post will be based at The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (the Unit), a faculty of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
The Vaccines & Immunity Theme undertakes a series of translational and more fundamental immunological studies aiming at understanding the development of the immune system in infancy, particularly in the context of bacterial colonisation and infectious diseases. We have a large portfolio of clinical trials and observational studies, including qualitative science projects to understand determinants for uptake of maternal and neonatal care and associated interventions, such as vaccine uptake and infection prevention.
The Unit is seeking an experienced senior immunologist to join the Vaccines and Immunity Theme as Associate Professor or Full Professor. The successful candidate’s programme is expected to complement and synergize with existing research at the Unit in The Gambia in the fields of tuberculosis, respiratory virus, and Group A streptococcal immunology as well as with a diverse programme of early- and late-stage vaccine trials (human papillomavirus, pneumococcus, meningococcus, polio, yellow fever, malaria etc.) including maternal vaccine trials.
They will be educated to PhD level in Immunology or closely related field in human infectious disease, Data Science or Vaccine Immunology. A consistent and significant track record of attracting research grant income from major research funders is essential. Experience in the use of data analysis and/or bioinformatics techniques to analyse complex multiparameter laboratory datasets is essential with a proven track record of delivering world-class discovery science research in human infectious disease and/or vaccine immunology. Strengths in laboratory immunology as well as in the high-level data analysis and/or bioinformatics for example, for the integration of multiple cellular, -omics and serological readouts, would be valuable although other areas of expertise will also be considered. The post is full time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed term for 3 years initially.
The post is funded by the MRC and is available immediately.
The salary will be on Grade 8 for Associate Professor in the range £62,028 to £71,192 per annum or on Professorial salary scale Grade C or Bii in the range of £71,332 to £93,950 per annum inclusive depending on qualifications and experience. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. For displaced staff, benefits include accommodation, flights, and relocation support.
