The role

We are seeking to appoint a talented and enthusiastic researcher with experience in qualitative research methods to join the QuinteT research group (Qualitative Research Integrated within Trials; led by Professor Jenny Donovan).

The position is available on a full-time basis (we will also consider appointments on a part time basis). The post is currently funded until 31/10/2024 with potential for outstanding candidates to continue working within the School. Ideally, the candidate will be available to start from early November 2023

What will you be doing?

The QuinteT group uses qualitative research methods to optimise recruitment and informed consent to randomised controlled trials (RCTs). We have gained an international reputation for developing and applying the QuinteT Recruitment Intervention (QRI) in over 70 challenging RCTs, across a range of clinical contexts including surgical procedures, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, physiotherapy, renal medicine or novel procedures or methods of management compared with standard or inactive treatments.

The post will involve setting up and undertaking in-depth interviews with healthcare professionals and patients, as well as liaising with healthcare professionals to ensure that audio-recordings are made of appointments where eligible patients are presented with information about RCTs. You will analyse these data (using methods of constant comparison, or other appropriate methods and techniques such as content, framework or conversation analysis) and work with the study lead and management group to optimise recruitment and informed consent.

We are advertising this post for either a Senior Research Associate (J Grade) – suitable for a researcher with post-doctoral experience or a Research Associate (I grade) – which is a developmental role that may be suitable for candidates at an earlier stage of their career. The successful applicant will have experience of undertaking applied qualitative research, most likely in a health services research setting. The post will suit a researcher with a PhD in health services research or those with a background in sociology or anthropology, who are keen to develop a research profile in RCT methodology.
