We have an exciting opportunity available for an experienced computing scientist with expertise in artificial intelligence to engage in cutting-edge respiratory magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) research at the POLARIS Research Group at the University of Sheffield.

You will be based in the POLARIS group in the Division of Clinical Medicine under the mentorship of Professor Jim Wild and Dr Helen Marshall. The POLARIS group are internationally-recognised for clinical respiratory research using hyperpolarised gas and proton MRI of the lungs (Webpage: https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/polaris, Twitter: @UosPolaris).

This role will involve exploration of large pulmonary MRI clinical research datasets using artificial intelligence. Strategies will be developed to analyse large datasets of 3D images regionally to aid with disease phenotyping / classification, investigation of longitudinal changes in functional images and prediction of disease progression.

We are seeking a candidate with a good Honours degree in Physics or Engineering (or equivalent) and a PhD in medical image processing / analysis (or equivalent). As this role involves the analysis of large imaging datasets using artificial intelligence, previous experience in machine learning / deep learning is essential. Candidates should have excellent image processing and computational skills, and practical experience of working with pulmonary MR images, clustering / classification algorithms and survival analysis are preferred.

A proven track record of high-quality scientific publications and demonstrated evidence in working in a multi-disciplinary team are essential. Previous experience in assisting the supervision of PhD students and technical staff is desirable.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
