Job Summary
Medical robotics is an established research strength at Imperial College, with work in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechEng) and the Hamlyn Centre leading the way, specifically in the context of surgical robotics and allied technologies. Medical robotics has experienced a huge growth in interest and uptake by the wider clinical community and industry. With the closer alignment of the Hamlyn Centre and MechEng, the opportunity for growth in the sector will be equally valuable for the College, Department and the Centre, and will impact both our teaching and research offering.
We wish to recruit a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to specifically target sensing methodologies (hardware and software) for application to healthcare robotics, bridging the gap between mechanical engineering and healthcare technologies by driving new research in materials, manufacturing processes and sensing schemes for next generation diagnostic and therapeutic systems. It will involve new research into wearable sensors, flexible and stretchable materials, analogue and mixed electronics, additive fabrication processes (e.g. leveraging the thermal fibre drawing, and the multi-scale material printing facilities at the Hamlyn Centre), and mixed reality sensors and systems for deployment within the broad medical field, within and outside of the operating theatre. Due to the Hamlyn Centre’s association with the Institute of Global Health Innovation, the postholder’s research will cover novel sensing systems suitable for use in both high- and low-resource settings.
The postholder will also be expected to deliver teaching in the Department of Mechanical Engineering’s MEng and MSc programmes and contribute to new modules and courses in Robotics, for which there has been high demand.
This newly created post will stimulate the development of new programmes, generate new grant income and design new courses; bringing together expertise from across the Faculty of Engineering whilst also increasing integration with staff from the Faculty of Medicine. The expansion of this area will generate unique solutions through the combination of clinical and engineering disciplines, a key principle on which the centre was founded.

Duties and Responsibilities
As a member of Academic Staff, you will be required to:
- Develop a research portfolio in sensing and manufacturing that will bridge the gap between engineering and healthcare technologies, and deploy the next generation of diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
- Contribute towards developing the curriculum of teaching programmes in materials, manufacturing, sensing and signal processing.
- Represent the Hamlyn Centre at symposiums, conferences and forums, bolstering the Centre’s reputation and taking an active role in the strategic planning of the Centre.
- Participate in Centre and/or Department administrative roles, attending relevant operational and strategic committees and working groups as required.
Skills, knowledge and experience
We require you to be educated to a minimum of doctoral level, in a Mechanical or Bio-engineering subject, with a specific focus on Robotics.
You should have a track record in Hardware and Software Engineering.
It is crucial that you have a national (and international, for Senior Lecturer) reputation in one or more of the following areas:
- Biomedical Material Modelling
- Tissue Characterization
- In Situ Diagnostics
- Machine Learning
- Signal Processing
- Wearable Sensors
- Virtual Reality for Surgery
- Affordable Technologies for Health
