Full Time Fixed Term (for 10 months)

Applications are invited for a Clinical Research Fellow (Maternity Cover) to join Professor Andrew Lotery’s vision science research group to undertake a leading role in an ongoing Wellcome Trust funded study “Deciphering AMD by deep phenotyping and machine learning  (PINNACLE)”. https://classic.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04269304

This is an exciting opportunity for a clinical ophthalmologist interested in developing their clinical research skills. The successful applicant will participate in an ongoing six year clinical study assessing the role of artificial intelligence in diagnosing age related macular degeneration (AMD). There will also be the opportunity to attend Professor Lotery’s medical retina clinics and participate in other clinical trials as a sub-investigator.

The role will involve utilising adaptive optics to phenotype patients with age related macular degeneration and other retinal diseases, liaising with eye clinics in England, Vienna and Basel and the Computer Science Department at Imperial College London. This is a “big data” project employing artificial intelligence to help understand the commonest cause of blindness in the Developed World.

You will have MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery) and MRCOphth or 1st part FRCOphth (or an equivalent qualifications) as well as previous ophthalmic experience working as a doctor. Experience of academic writing, participation on clinical trials and giving intravitreal injections would be an advantage but are not essential. The successful applicant will be highly motivated, capable of independent working and have excellent organisational and communication skills.

Andrew Lotery is Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southampton. The Vision Sciences research group investigates the role of biomarkers in identifying the early stages of AMD. In addition, the wider group’s focus is on understanding the basic mechanisms of this disease so as to develop disease specific therapies in order to improve vision.

The employing organisation is the University of Southampton which offers a competitive salary, pension scheme and other benefits.

This is a 10 month maternity replacement post offered as a fixed term contract, to start in November 2023.

A satisfactory DBS disclosure at Enhanced level is required for this post.
