The Infection Innovation Consortium, known as iiCON, brings together the North West’s largest concentration of infectious diseases research in a new >£120M programme. It capitalizes on the region’s track record in working on active translational research into antimicrobials, vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics.

As part of the iiCON project, the Roberts Group is assembling and screening a natural microbial isolate library with the aim of identifying novel antimicrobial molecules. Dr Roberts is seeking applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join the ambitious team.

As the Post-Doctoral Research Associate, it is your opportunity to lead a variety of projects within the antimicrobial, chemotherapy and resistance space including the preparation and screening of a natural microbial isolate library as part of the iiCON activities. The projects will involve microbiological screening, fractionation, purification, and characterization of antimicrobial natural products from environmental bacteria and investigations into resistance emergence to these, and other, compounds.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Microbiological screening for antimicrobial activity
  • Preparation and fractionation of cell free extracts of environmental microbes
  • Bioinformatic analysis of biosynthetic gene clusters from whole genome sequencing data of lead isolates
  • Produce and disseminate research outputs to the team and collaborators within iiCON
  • Liaise with iiCON project partners to determine if the projects can benefit from synergistic expertise
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate project students and participate in teaching

You will possess (not limited to):

  • PhD in a microbiologically relevant subject (or if you are close to submission)
  • Up to date knowledge of AMR, antimicrobial chemotherapy and surrounding issues.
  • Good knowledge of recent microbiology, molecular biology and bioinformatic techniques
  • Relevant experience of working within a microbiology research laboratory & experience of standard laboratory protocols
  • Analysing genomic DNA sequences for biosynthetic gene clusters.
  • Bespoke experimental design and problem solving
  • Working to targets, milestones and deadlines in a similar environment
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to develop effective working relationships with a range of people at all levels from diverse cultures

Please read the full Job Description & Person Specification for more details.

In return, we offer:

  • 30 days annual leave, plus bank holidays, plus Christmas closure days
  • Generous occupational pension schemes
  • Government backed “cycle to work” scheme.
