Fixed Term contract up to November 2026

Role Summary

This Research Fellow position is a part of an exciting project that has been funded by the Wellcome Discovery Award. The project’s primary aim is to investigate the neural mechanisms that underlie attentional processes during reading. We will combine electrophysiological techniques with advanced brain imaging tools as well as computational modelling to study the neural signatures of attention in the context of reading comprehension. By doing so, we hope to advance our understanding of how the human brain processes written language and allocates attention during this cognitive task.

We intend to develop a computational model of the human ventral system using MEG data recorded in humans engaged in visual search and reading tasks. To achieve this, we will merge Deep Neural Networks from AI with computational neuroscience models (in the spirit of NeuroAI). The successful candidate for this project will be responsible for developing and simulating the models as well as relating them to human electrophysiological data.

The Research Fellow will also be expected to prepare the results and developments for high-quality academic publications, present them at national and international academic conferences, and engage in public activities. Furthermore, the research fellow will be required to supervise students and contribute to the School of Psychology through leadership. This research has the potential to significantly advance our understanding of the human brain’s cognitive processes, specifically in the context of reading comprehension.

Main Duties

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor 
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Analyse and interpret data and develop models using Python and relevant modulales
  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students 
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods with a focus on computational models of the visual system 
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research

Person Specification

  • The successful candidate(s) must have a PhD (or near to completion) including topics of neuroimaging, human electrophysiology, cognitive neuroscience, biomedical engineering, machine learning or an associated area
  • High-level analytical capability
  • Expertise on programming Python or Matlab
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Fluency in relevant techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively 
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
  • Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
  • Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
