Research Associate at University of Glasgow

This post is full time and is fixed term for up to 12 months.

The School of Cancer Sciences is looking to recruit a Research Associate to make a leading contribution to a research project characterising the abnormal BBB in GBM margin regions at the molecular, structural and functional levels. You will contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.

Applications are invited for an exciting postdoctoral research opportunity working with a world class team of collaborative, multidisciplinary researchers to characterise the abnormal blood-brain barrier (BBB) in tumour margin regions of glioblastoma (GBM). This work is crucial to understanding the factors that determine drug delivery and therefore the likely efficacy of novel drugs for GBM. The project is being led by Professor Anthony Chalmers in the Institute of Cancer Sciences (University of Glasgow), with Professor Colin Smith at the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences (University of Edinburgh) and Pharmidex Pharmaceutical Services being the key partners. The project is part of a rapidly growing programme of brain tumour and neuroscience research across Glasgow and Edinburgh and the successful candidate will benefit from world leading clinical and scientific expertise and research infrastructure in both centres. They will undertake detailed structural and functional characterisation of the BBB in marginal regions of GBM using human samples and preclinical models and a range of molecular, imaging and pharmacological techniques. They will contribute to the management and execution of this complex and challenging project as well as the writing and submission of research presentations and publications.

The Chalmers laboratory is situated in the Wolfson Wohl Cancer Research Centre which is part of the Institute of Cancer Sciences at the University of Glasgow – one of Europe’s leading cancer research centres – and adjacent to the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute. Additional supervision and expertise in Glasgow will be provided by Drs Joanna Birch and Antoine Vallatos. Prof Smith’s laboratory in the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences provides an outstanding research environment for neuropathological studies, underpinned by state-of-the-art core services and advanced spatial imaging technologies. Co-investigators in Edinburgh include Prof Val Brunton, Dr Paul Brennan and Dr Gerry Thompson.
