The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, today issued the following statement:

“Canada welcomes the initial crossing of humanitarian assistance that was delivered through the Rafah border crossing yesterday. We extend our thanks and commend our partners and those who worked tirelessly to facilitate this delivery. Allowing essential assistance to reach those in need is critical to saving lives.

“While the assistance delivered is providing food, water and medical supplies to meet the urgent needs of Palestinian civilians in Gaza, it is a small fraction of what is needed. We urge all parties to continue allowing the rapid, sustained and unimpeded access of essential life-saving humanitarian assistance, while simultaneously allowing for Canadian citizens, permanent residents and their families to leave.

“Canada continues to work closely with its allies and partners to support Canadians in the region, including facilitating the safe departure of Canadians from Gaza as quickly as possible.

“Canada reiterates its call for all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and to ensure the protection of civilians as well as humanitarian and medical personnel. The international community must continue working together to uphold the principles of humanity and dignity and the protection of all civilians.”
