Birmingham Newman University in partnership with Birmingham City Council Public Health are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a funded PhD studentship. The research as part of the PhD will focus on health inequalities present in Birmingham and how they particularly impact on Black African and Black Caribbean populations in the city and the region.
This opportunity is in honour of Dr Nicole Andrews whose research provided a depth of understanding of health inequalities present in today’s society and is aimed at supporting the work of the Birmingham and Lewisham African Caribbean Health Inequalities Review (BLACHIR).
As part of the PhD package you will be supported by an experienced supervisory team. Under the supervision of the team you will design a mixed-methods study that will allow the collection and analysis of data. The final study design will be agreed by both the University and the Council. The findings and recommendations of the study will be shared with both the University and the Council.
The opportunity is available full time (3 years) or part time (4 years). The package will include the cost of the study fees. The successful candidate will also receive a maintenance grant of £13,000 per year (full time) for 3 years or £10,000 per year (part time) for 4 years.
The opportunity is open to all UK and UK dual citizenship nationals. Employees of the Council and the University are welcome to apply. In such cases the maintenance grant will be used to backfill to sufficient capacity for the successful candidate to engage with their studies.
All applicants must have received at least a ‘Merit’ grade for their Masters/MRes overall or a merit on the Dissertation element.
Recommendation for the studentship award will be at the discretion of the interview panel and subject to approval by both Birmingham Newman University and Liverpool Hope University, who are Newman’s research degree awarding partner.
Interested applicants must follow the procedure outlined for enquiries and applications, available via the ‘Apply’ link and complete an Expression of Interest form. Please stipulate ‘Studentship’ when asked on the form how your studies are to be funded.
Deadline for submission of an Expression of Interest form is 2400 on 8 December 2023.
Applicants interested in this opportunity can find out more by contacting Dr Adam Benkwitz via email: A.Benkwitz@staff.newman.ac.uk
