Job description

Professional Development for educators and professional services staff working in education is key to the future educational successes of the Faculty. We are seeking an experienced academic from a clinical or non-clinical background to develop and oversee the professional development of all of its four main areas of AEP work: Teaching Student Support, Leadership in Teaching and Curriculum Development, Scholarship, Knowledge Exchange and Impact, Esteem and Recognition. A clinician appointed into the role will take a closer focus toward the development of faculty and honorary colleagues who deliver medical and allied health education. There is a degree of flexibility in this according to the experience and skill set of the appointee.

Key responsibilities

  • To work with the Co-Directors of the Centre for Education to provide leadership and an inclusive approach to professional development  
  • To work with other members of the Faculty, as appropriate, to ensure Centre for Education colleagues are well-placed to develop and progress professionally, mindful of the core aims of the Centre  
  • To work with KCL colleagues placed centrally and within other faculties such as KPED to harness and develop a range of professional development opportunities, mindful of King’s Strategic Vision 2029  
  • To co-ordinate a range of developmental opportunities to support professional development of varied professional groups across Life Sciences and MBBS, working with others in these roles collaboratively and collegially.  
  • To work with the Senior Lecturer / Reader in Education Innovation in paying particular emphasis to the development of pedagogical research skills amongst AEP colleagues and honorary / affiliated staff, acting as a focus for pedagogical development  
  • To liaise with those in similar roles across other institutions, for the benefit of KCL  
  • To work closely with Faculty Education Services to support University Faculty and School initiatives, as appropriate.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • Educational Qualification: FHEA or equivalent  
  • Active participation in CPD and associated appraisal of Educational Role (either through NHS or University processes, to include up to date Equality and Diversity Training).
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of educational programmes, their design and delivery, across the Life Sciences and Medicine fields.   
  • Coaching skills and ability to apply them to the development of others   with the abilities to consider development opportunities of a range of staff, and counsel them according to need and career aspiration, mindful of the needs of the Centre for Education as a whole.
  • Ability to develop education research skills and innovation programmes in others.
  • Proven experience in Faculty Development for a range of educators and professional services staff.
  • Proven experience in evaluation, educational appraisal and providing feedback to staff members from a variety of backgrounds, including experience in compiling, reviewing and acting upon data.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of clinical and academic colleagues across University and NHS Trusts.
  • Advanced skills in leading and managing an educational team including high level communication and influencing skills.
  • The ability to problem solve and achieve desired results within programme constraints.

Desirable criteria

  • Primary medical Qualification (with GMC registration) or similar clinical qualification and registration, or Doctorate degree for non-clinical applicants.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students and the Academic Centre to enhance outcomes and evaluation.
