ACN2 scale for pre-CCT trainees (£38,704 – £57,349) pa,

GP salaries dependent upon career stage

Joining the prestigious ECAT-i programme (Edinburgh Clinical Academic Track – inclusive) involves undertaking a Wellcome Trust PhD for Health Professionals in a world-leading research centre at the University of Edinburgh, with combined clinical training/practice in association with NHS Education for Scotland & NHS Lothian.

ECAT-i is the University of Edinburgh’s exciting academic track for all medical and surgical specialties, including primary care professionals.  The programme aims to build on the principles of research excellence & mentorship developed during the successful ECAT Wellcome Clinical PhD programme, with a strong emphasis on research inclusivity and a positive research culture.

We are seeking to recruit up to five outstanding health professionals for the August 2024 intake.

• Medically qualified specialty trainees in any clinical discipline
• Primary care practitioners
• Candidates from across the UK

To maximise flexibility for individual trainees, two types of post are available:  ECAT Clinical Lectureships (with combined clinical training or experience; Wellcome Trust PhD for Health Professionals; and mentorship) & ECAT PhD Fellowships (with Wellcome Trust PhD for Health Professionals & mentorship).  Before beginning the 3-year PhD project, funding is provided for a preparatory period when selection of supervisors/planning of the PhD project are optimised with the support of the ECAT directors – 12 months for the former, 3 months for the latter (although this could be open to negotiation depending on personal circumstances).  Following the PhD, there is funding for research training and clinical practice up to CCT + 6 months, or 2 years post-PhD as appropriate.

Your skills/attributes for success: 

• All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to a research career and have a track record appropriate to their career stage in basic, translational or clinical research.
• Candidates for ECAT-i Clinical Lectureships must hold or obtain (no later than August 2024) a specialty training position with a National Training Number (NTN) in their chosen discipline in the UK. If you are a GP it is anticipated you will join the programme post-CCT.
• Candidates for ECAT-i PhD Fellowships do not need a specialty training position with a NTN.
• Candidates for all posts must be GMC registered.
• Candidates for ECAT-i Clinical Lectureships will typically be in the early years of specialty training at the time of application, but consideration will be given to those at more advanced stages of training (eg ST4 or early years of SpR training) who are committed to an academic career. 
• Applications are welcome from trainees in ALL medical & surgical specialties and from ALL regions of the UK. 
• All applicants must be eligible for higher specialist clinical training.

Non-UK citizens are welcome to apply, but must be suitable for sponsorship under a Skilled Worker visa.  If you already have the right to live and work in the UK, you may be eligible for a ‘home’ fee status.  Otherwise the programme will only cover the cost of ‘home’ postgraduate tuition fees and you must cover the balance between ‘home’ & ‘international/EU’ fees.
