Police have released bodycam footage of officers reacting to the shooting at Charles University in Prague, which claimed the lives of 14 people.
The gunman, identified as 24-year-old David Kozak, opened fire in the university’s philosophy department where he was a student.
Footage shows armed officers entering the building, with the public fleeing. The initial belief was that the gunman was on upper floors, but officials later redirected the search to the roof.
A perimeter was established around the university building.
The gunman shot and injured three people outside the building with a long-ranged weapon. Police fired back, and as they approached, the gunman killed himself.
His body was found during the building search and “piles of ammunition” were discovered at the scene.
The gunman, previously unknown to the police, had a “huge arsenal of weapons and ammunition”, Police Chief Martin Vondrasek said after the killings on Thursday.
The gunman’s attack left a further 25 injured.
Lenka Hlavkova, director of the Institute of Music Science at Charles University, was among the victims.
Prague’s police force say the suspect likely killed his father earlier on the same day in Hostoun and had planned to kill himself.
A search of his home revealed suspicions of involvement in the killing of another man and his two-month-old daughter the previous Friday.
The incident is the worst mass shooting in the country’s history and a national day of mourning has been declared for Saturday to honour the victims.
Prime Minister Petr Fiala and President Petr Pavel expressed condolences and deep sorrow for the tragic incident.
President Pavel said there was “helpless anger at the unnecessary loss of so many young lives”.
“I would like to express my sincere condolences to all relatives of the victims, to all who were at this tragic incident,” he said.
The horrific incident has generated a wave of sympathy from nations across the globe.
US President Joe Biden sent his condolences, slamming the “senseless” shooting.
“My heart is with those who lost their lives in today’s senseless shooting in Prague, those injured, and the Czech people,” he wrote on X.
“Our authorities are in touch with Czech law enforcement, and we stand ready to offer additional support if needed.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky were among those also offering condolence
