The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today met with KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, during her visit in Montréal, Quebec. Minister Joly extended Canada’s sympathies to Minister Kamikawa following the recent earthquake in Japan and reiterated Canada’s offer of support.

During the meeting, the Ministers discussed the regional and global peace and security challenges stemming from Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, ongoing tensions in the Indo-Pacific region and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The ministers also discussed the progress made in strengthening collaboration between Canada and Japan under the Canada-Japan Action Plan and the Indo-Pacific Strategy, particularly in the areas of rule of law, regional security, multilateral cooperation and economic relations, and how they can better leverage these strategic plans to deepen our overall cooperation in the future.

They also expressed their common commitment to advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda, as well as their shared belief in the important role it plays in promoting peace, resilience and security in the Indo-Pacific Region.
