An US man with a history of leaving the scene of vehicle accidents has been arrested for allegedly fleeing the car wreck that killed his 16-year-old daughter and injured other members of his family.
Elliott Binney, 41, appeared with two black eyes and other facial bruises in his mugshot several hours after the rollover crash in the state of Oklahoma, reported the New York Post.
Officers responded to the single-vehicle wreck in Bixby, in Tulsa’s southern suburbs, around 9.20pm local time on Thursday, TV station 2 News Oklahoma reported, citing the Bixby Police Department.
Mr Binney’s teen daughter, Shelby, was thrown from the vehicle and later pronounced dead at the hospital, authorities told the outlet.
She had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, they added.
Three of her family members — including one adult and two primary school-age children — were also hospitalised following the crash, 2 News said.
Police arrested Mr Binney about 80km south from the scene in Checotah on Friday morning, the outlet reported.
Witnesses allegedly saw Mr Binney, 41, driving about 110km per hour and passing multiple cars in a no-passing zone moments before the accident, authorities told 2 News.
One witness also recalled seeing a man standing outside the family’s SUV after the crash, the unnamed individual told the outlet.
When he asked the man to sit down and inquired who was still in the car, the man reportedly looked disoriented and ran away, they claimed.
Police believe that Mr Binney initially fled on foot before getting into a second vehicle.
“He walked to a family-owned business and retrieved a vehicle. We were able to track this vehicle electronically and ultimately made an arrest in the case,” Bixby Police chief Todd Blish told TV station FOX23 Tulsa.
Mr Binney was behind the wheel of a grey pick-up truck when Checotah Police took him into custody on Friday, body camera footage showed.
When officers went through Mr Binney’s car, they found vodka and several pill bottles with the labels torn off in the front seat, according to the footage.
Mr Binney told officers that the accident was caused by him skidding on an oil spot and running off the road, FOX23 said.
There was also a bottle of vodka at the scene, and Mr Binney admitted that the family bought the liquor and that he had a gulp of it while driving, the outlet added.
By the time Mr Binney was arrested, too much time had passed for a DUI test, 2 News explained.
Mr Binney’s wife, who was in the car at the time of the accident, told police they had been arguing before the wreck.
Mr Binney ultimately was charged with leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death, first-degree manslaughter, and passing a vehicle in a no-passing zone, 2 News reported.
Mr Binney left jail on a $US102,100 ($A156,000) bail, the outlet said.
Thursday’s tragedy was far from Mr Binney’s first brush with the law: his extensive criminal record includes three previous charges for leaving the scene of an accident, which were dismissed in 2010 and 2016, 2 News reported.
Shelby Binney — who was a sophomore at Bixby High School — was remembered by her cheerleading gym as a “bright light” with a “heart of gold.”
The Bixby Police Department did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
