February 26, 2024 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada today issued the following statement regarding the recent elections held in Belarus on February 25, 2024:

“Canada rejects Belarus’ latest so-called “elections” where opposition has been suppressed, media silenced and political prisoners kept behind bars. By refusing to let observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) monitor results, Belarus has continued to disregard the democratic rights of its people.

“We call on the Lukashenko regime to reverse these anti-democratic actions, end its systematic campaign of repression against its people, media and opposition parties, and release political prisoners.

“Canada stands with Belarusians’ aspirations to live in a free, democratic, and sovereign Belarus, without fear of oppression.”
