The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

“Today is a day to celebrate the French language, the diverse and rich cultures of the francophone world, and the spirit of solidarity that animates La Francophonie. Canada is proud to be a pioneering member of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) and is working with its global partners to promote French language and advance democracy, human rights and gender equality.

“The theme of this year’s International Day of La Francophonie, Créer, Innover et Entreprendre en Français [create, innovate and engage in French] reminds us of the immense creative and economic potential of La Francophonie as a global community of those who speak French.

“Canada, home to some 8 million people who identify French as their first official language, is immensely proud of its francophone heritage. We strongly believe Canada’s bilingualism is an advantage in today’s world and that the OIF is a strategic forum for advancing key priorities such as the protection and promotion of the French language, the cultural and economic development of our societies and the promotion of common values.

“The international order is affected by several movements of regional destabilization, and it is in this tense context that we must remain committed to strengthening francophone institutions and to making sure they represent and serve all members of society, especially women, young people and vulnerable populations. We are also working hard to enhance the use of the French language in online content, notably through our contributions to the TV5MONDEplus digital platform.

“Looking ahead, Canada will be delighted to receive an OIF trade mission in Montréal and Québec, Quebec, from June 11 to 13, 2024. This will be an opportunity to strengthen business ties and explore new economic opportunities in the francophone world. En route to the Francophonie Summit this October in Villers-Cotterêts, France, let us work in solidarity and dare to be creative and innovative in meeting the needs of the world’s French-speaking populations and addressing the challenges of our time.”
