The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, today issued the following statement to mark International Development Week:

“International Development Week, which takes place this year from February 5 to 11, celebrates the many ways that Canadians work with partners in developing countries to help eradicate poverty and contribute to a more peaceful, inclusive and prosperous world. The actions of partners are critical to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“As the world responds to the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, increasing conflict and displacement, international development continues to be central to finding our way forward. Canada’s international development work includes thousands of projects in over 150 countries. And although we know that millions of lives have been changed by the projects Canada supports, we also know that the immediate results we see are often just the tip of the iceberg.

“Consider the ripple effects that sustainable agriculture programs funded by Canada today will have for farmers and families tackling the food and climate crises in the decades to come. Imagine what innovative solutions will spring from the minds of thousands of women and girls who feel more empowered to share their ideas thanks to women’s rights organizations and gender equality programs.

“By approaching the world with care, compassion and a spirit of solidarity, international development is building a brighter future for all. When youths have the tools they need to reach their potential, everyone benefits. And when all people can participate in creating solutions to the challenges their communities face, those solutions are more likely to be successful and take root.

“This week, I encourage you to connect with international development organizations across Canada to learn more about their incredible work on food security, climate action, health, education, gender equality and more. Let’s get informed and inspired to #GoForTheGoals together!”
