The EPSRC Doctoral Prize provides opportunities for the most outstanding EPSRC-funded PhD students to receive up to 12 months of additional support following their PhD. It is designed to offer support and flexibility and is targeted at excellent scientists and engineers who wish to establish a research career.

The EPSRC Doctoral Prize aims to develop independent researchers. Applicants are encouraged to move into new areas of research and demonstrate the ability to work independently from their former PhD supervisor.

The scheme aims to provide career development beyond the end of the PhD and specifically to increase the impact of the PhD in terms of publications, knowledge transfer and outreach activities as a first step into an independent research career. It also aims to develop independent researchers.

In this call, there are up to six Doctoral Prize Awards on offer.

Eligibility

You must have received support for your PhD studies from the EPSRC (fees/stipend) before the Doctoral Prize start date, and submitted a PhD between 1st January 2023 and 31st December2023 (viva does not need to have taken place)

Length of tenure

Up to 12 months. The start date is flexible; however, the earliest start date is 1st October 2023. Please note that there is potential for a delay to start dates due to the impact of COVID-19 and the Researcher Academy will provide further details as the situation develops.

Value

A Doctoral Prize salary of £35,308 (R&T4a spine point 29) per annum (subject to PAYE and NI) with research expenses of up to £5,000.
