Role Summary
A NIHR-funded Clinical Lecturer in Renal Speciality post is available for 4 years. The primary objective is to facilitate clinicians who will go on to become future academic leaders. The post provides the opportunity for higher and advanced sub-specialist clinical training, alongside research and contribution to teaching in a dynamic and high-impact field. Supporting tertiary and quaternary NHS services across the region, the post-holder will have a unique opportunity to contribute to research in their chosen speciality field, as well as to work across disciplines.
Main Duties
Academic
Individual and Group Research Projects
- To perform clinical and/or laboratory-based research studies complementing the academic interests at ICVS.
- Attendance at research group meetings and the seminar programme at ICVS.
Analysis of data from experimental models and subsequent presentation and publication
- To learn and apply statistical methods to analyse scientific study data.
- To prepare study findings in a format appropriate for speech or poster presentation.
Participate in writing grant and research ethics applications
- To prepare applications to the Research Ethics Committee for the approval of proposed studies.
- To prepare grant applications for the funding of proposed future studies, to bodies such as the British Heart Foundation, Wellcome Trust and NIHR.
Contribute to undergraduate and post graduate teaching programmes for a variety of courses including but not limited to the MBChB, BMedSc and MRes courses.
Clinical
50% whole time equivalent as a Renal Registrar at a clinical unit, as determined by the deanery, individual requirements and clinical competencies.
Teaching
The post holder will be expected to play an active role in delivering bedside and small group teaching to clinical medical students and junior doctors. In addition, they will have the opportunity to contribute to lectures, modules and small group teaching sessions on renal and cardiovascular medicine topics on the undergraduate MBChB, BMedSc and MRes courses. They can also be involved in supervising MD/PhD students and clinical fellows.
Person Specification
- MRCP (part 2)
- Experience at the level of ST3 or greater
- Must hold a current NTN (ST3 or above)
- Higher Degree (PhD or MD) in a subject area pertinent to cardiovascular Medicine
- Evidence of good progress in clinical training and that completion of specialty training may be accommodated either during or after the 4 year period of the NIHR CL award
- Demonstration of acquisition of the level of knowledge and skills necessary for the achievement of Foundation and clinical (matched to the entry level) competencies or equivalent
- Demonstration of the potential for scientific independence and the ability to lead a research team.
- Demonstration of understanding, and commitment to, an academic career.
