The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, today issued the following statement:

“On this International Volunteer Day, we honour the remarkable contributions that volunteers make to international development programs. Each year, thousands of Canadian volunteers dedicate their time, experience and energy to these programs. By giving back to others, they help advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and make the world greener, more inclusive and more equitable.

“The theme for this year is apt: Solidarity Through Volunteering. Volunteers not only demonstrate their personal dedication to helping others—they also illustrate Canada’s collective commitment to helping people experiencing poverty and communities facing crises.

“Today also offers a great opportunity to highlight Canada’s Volunteer Cooperation Program. Each year, this program provides Canadians from diverse professions, communities and backgrounds with the chance to share their expertise abroad. Volunteers from coast to coast to coast—including seniors, professionals, youths and members of cultural communities across Canada—give their time virtually or in person.

“In the face of the immense challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, participants in the Volunteer Cooperation Program have shown flexibility, cultural sensitivity and resilience. Working closely with volunteers from the Global South, participants have proven their ability to adapt to local needs and realities so that they can contribute where they are needed most.

“By 2027, over 10,000 participants in the Volunteer Cooperation Program will have contributed to projects in more than 40 countries around the world. Just imagine the countless lives that will have been changed by their dedication and spirit of cooperation!

“This International Volunteer Day, join me in celebrating the importance of giving back to others and in thanking volunteers for their invaluable contributions.”
