Hatton-WYNG Junior Research Fellow in Law, Medicine and Life Sciences (Fixed Term 3 Years) at University of Cambridge

Hughes Hall and the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Law, Medicine and Life Sciences seek to appoint a research associate to pursue an independent programme of research on any aspect of the law’s intersection with medicine and the life sciences.  This is a three-year position, with an ideal start date in October 2023, and is funded by a generous donation from the Hatton Trust and WYNG Foundation. 

The scope of potential research topics should be interpreted broadly.  For example, one might work on legal and ethical questions that arise with respect to: the use of emerging technologies (e.g., AI/machine learning, genome editing, tissue regeneration); data aggregation and processing; the delivery of health care; incentives for medical innovation, such as patents, trade secrets, SPCs; the use of humans or animals in biomedical research; antibiotic resistance; or the safety, efficacy and affordability of pharmaceuticals.  These are merely a few illustrative examples. 

The core obligation of the postholder is to propose, plan and manage a high-quality program of original research; publicise the outcomes of that research through presentations and publications; and engage in the academic life of Hughes Hall and the Centre for Law, Medicine and Life Sciences.  The postholder will be required to reside in or nearby Cambridge.

Selection criteria

Applications will be judged on the basis of the candidate’s potential to undertake a significant, exciting and feasible program of research on the law’s intersection with medicine and the life science, as evidenced by their research proposal, publication record and academic references.  Willingness and potential to contribute to the collegiate academic community will also be considered.  This position is intended to support someone at an early stage in their academic career.

Essential knowledge, skills and experience:

• (1) A degree in law.
• (2) A higher degree assessed in full or in part by dissertation, or equivalent experience, demonstrating exceptional research ability.
• (3) A proposed programme of research for the duration of the Fellowship that will make a valuable contribution to the candidate’s field of the study.
• (4) Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present research findings effectively to fellow professionals at conferences and workshops and to audiences not familiar with the subject area.
