The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will attend the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, New York, alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. During her visit, Minister Joly will meet with international partners and allies to address crucial global challenges and to work with UN members to strengthen international peace and security.

On Tuesday, September 20, the Minister will accompany the Prime Minister at the opening of the High-Level General Debate. Throughout the week, the Minister will engage with a wide range of representatives of UN member states and with partners on key human rights issues and to advance Canada’s feminist foreign policy. The minister will also meet with the other G7 foreign ministers to further discuss Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its severe global impacts on food security and international security.

During her visit, Minister Joly will host an event with the Netherlands entitled Upholding Democracy and Human Rights in the Face of Rising Disinformation, in which she will share Canada’s action to counter disinformation, push back on digital authoritarianism and defend Internet freedom.

With the Global Survivors Fund, Minister Joly will host an event on conflict-related sexual violence, where with Nadia Murad, she will discuss the importance of centering survivors in the pursuit of justice, including reparations.

She will also attend a meeting of the Community of Democracies at which Canada will assume the group’s presidency, continuing the country’s efforts to unite with partners in protecting democracy and strengthening efforts to promote equality, human rights and freedom.

Minister Joly will conclude her participation at the UN General Assembly by delivering Canada’s national address in the High-Level General Debate on Monday, September 26.
