Project summary

The NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) Greater Manchester, which is funding this Master by Research, aims to explore the use of XR and the Metaverse to create awareness of Manchester as a viable alternative place for health research across the global market. The creation of an XR/Metaverse experience is hoped to promote the work of the CRN to a global audience who will be able to access and experience the trust and research capabilities from the comfort of their home. Working together with a professional development agency, this study will inform application design and test the suitability and usability of the metaverse for NIHR through a final user evaluation.

This project is funded by NIHR CRN Greater Manchester and will be supervised by Professor Timothy Jung (Manchester Met) and Dr Mandy tom Dieck (Manchester Met), and Sarah Fallon (NIHR).

Aims and objectives

The aim of the project is to fully explore the opportunities of the XR/Metaverse for creating awareness of the service and research offerings within the CNIHR Clinical Research Network Greater Manchester.

  1. To conduct a structured literature review and bibliometric analysis on the application and use cases of the metaverse/XR within the healthcare sector.
  2. To conduct stakeholder analysis and usability testing on XR/Metaverse applications within the clinical research context.
  3. To provide the clinical research network with solutions on how to implement XR/Metaverse
  4. To suggest a theoretical framework on the successful adoption and implementation of XR/Metaverse

Specific requirements of the project

The candidate must have or be expected to have a keen interest in immersive technologies. Project management skills are of an advantage as this project will involve a number of stakeholders. Experience in digital health or immersive tech in health are of an advantage.

In terms of research skills, this study will conduct qualitative data collection in forms of interviews and/or focus groups to explore the usability. Appropriate skills are of an advantage.
