The Co-development, Pilot Testing and Evaluation of a Bespoke Intervention to Increase Breast Cancer Screening Uptake in Black African Women in the UK at University of Bradford

Project Description:

This interdisciplinary studentship will co-develop, implement and evaluate a new bespoke intervention aimed at Black African women. Funded by Breast Cancer Now, it embodies our commitment to address health inequalities, and Black African women are less likely to take up cancer screening and are more likely to experience advanced breast cancer as a result.

The studentship will focus on working at the grassroots level by including Black African women and other key stakeholders throughout the project, culminating in an evaluation of the new intervention. This could have a real world impact across the UK, potentially saving lives.

The successful applicant will be able to capitalize on the skills and experiences of the wider cancer screening interdisciplinary research team based at the Wolfson Centre for Applied Health Research, and will also work more widely with organisations that support Black African women’s health including our partner The Caribbean and African Health Network.

Opportunities are available at the University of Bradford to undertake bespoke training through our innovative PGR Framework, navigating the website to access internal and external training opportunities in research methods, discipline related topics, transferable skills, wellbeing and employability. There is also the opportunity to gain a teaching qualification.

Funding notes:

This project has full funding from Breast Cancer Now for UK students, which will cover tuition fees, a tax-free stipend of £17,668 per year for living costs, and some expenses for the research

Funding for:

UK Students. International students are welcome to apply but they will need to fund the difference between home student and international student fees

We would like to appoint a candidate with lived experience or who has experience of accessing and working with the communities that this research will support, therefore applications from women with a Black African or African Caribbean heritage are encouraged.
