Today, the Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, spoke with José Miguel Ahumada, Chile’s Undersecretary of International Economic Relations.

Minister Ng congratulated Undersecretary Ahumada on his recent appointment and welcomed the opportunity to work with Chile’s new administration on the shared priorities of inclusive and progressive trade.

During the call, Minister Ng, and Undersecretary Ahumada reflected on the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) which came into force 25 years ago, and paved the way for bilateral trade to quadruple. They highlighted how Canada and Chile have worked together to modernize both the CCFTA’s trade and gender chapters and the Environmental Cooperation Agreement.

Minister Ng underlined Canada’s interest in continuing to advance shared priorities of social inclusion, gender equality, climate, democracy, human rights, multilateralism, and progressive economic policies, including through the Inclusive Trade Action Group and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The minister and the undersecretary discussed how to enhance the strong and growing trade and investment relationship between Canada and Chile.

Minister Ng and Undersecretary Ahumada are looking ahead to further engagement at APEC in May as well as the WTO Ministerial in June.
