ROLE PROFILE
The Professor of Surgical Education Research is a remunerated post (0.2 wte) lying within the Research, Grants & Travelling Fellowship Committee, of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The postholder is expected to be a non-clinical academic with an internationally recognised reputation in medical education. A proven track record, including major grant acquisition and high impact publication in surgical education is considered essential for this position. The role is expected to take up 1 day per week.
About the Research, Grants and Fellowship Committee
The Research, Grants and Fellowship Committee is chaired by Angus Watson, a consultant general and colorectal surgeon in the NHS Highland. Members of the research committee include Phil Taylor, Dean of the Dental Faculty, Farhat Din, Colorectal Surgeon and BCUK Chair and Paul Shiels, Cardiologist. The Committee plays an important role in helping to deliver our mission to improve patient outcomes and care.
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh offer a number of different fellowships, travelling fellowships, grants, awards, student bursaries and scholarships. The funding we offer cover different specialities of surgery and dentistry. This includes general surgery, cancer, orthopaedics, paediatric, vascular, cardiothoracic, maxillofacial, rural surgery, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, and dentistry.
In addition, partnerships and collaborations are an important part of the Research, Grants and Fellowship Committee, with an interest in surgical education and research. The Committee is involved in research projects with BCUK, MRC, ORUK, ASME and SCONe.
The role
The Professor of Surgical Education Research will involve the following key activities:
- Development of innovative surgical educational research activities relevant to each GMC-defined surgical specialty
- Work collaboratively with the newly created post of Professor of Simulation and Innovation in Surgical Education
- Horizon-scan and advise Council on surgical educational research
- Develop the surgical education research theme within the RCSEd, supporting new grants and fellowships by working closely with the chair of the Research, Grants & Travelling Fellowship Committee
- Collaborate with other academic organisations to deliver novel surgical education interventions and measure their impact
- Work with industrial partners and foster relationships with industry
- Involvement in project development for surgical education research
- Develop research into simulation techniques and other innovations in surgical education
- Contributing to both national and international simulation and surgical education projects
The postholder would report to the Research, Grants & Travelling Fellowship Committee, but would, to a significant degree, have autonomy in developing innovative surgical education research activity.
Salary
~£20,000 pro rata.
Eligibility
An academic educationalist with a background in medical education. Applicants do not have to be a current member/fellow of the RCSEd.
