The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

This is a unique opportunity to take a key role in a new national centre to help strengthen NHS cancer services.

The centre has two vacancies at the level of Associate Professor.

The new national centre will carry out large-scale epidemiological studies into the quality of care delivered by cancer services and patient outcomes. The centre offers a number of opportunities for candidates to develop methodological approaches for evaluating patterns of care and patient outcomes in linked national cancer datasets. These include: modelling complex pathways of care, developing risk prediction models and devising effective data visualisation.

The post holders will join the multidisciplinary team of researchers at the Clinical Effectiveness Unit, a collaboration of the LSHTM and the Royal College of Surgeons of England.  The post holder will also contribute to the wider academic activities of the LSHTM’s Faculty of Public Health and Policy.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in medical statistics, epidemiology, data science or a related discipline, along with a significant track record of attracting research grant income. They should have experience in carrying out and overseeing analyses of large complex datasets, proven ability to work independently as well as collaborate within a research team, experience of supervising / supporting junior staff, proven ability to meet research deadlines, and evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0FTE and fixed-term until 30 June 2026 (with a possibility of extension).

The post is funded by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and is available immediately.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale Grade 8 in the range £60,221-£69,118 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London.
