About HealthLumen

HealthLumen are specialists in quantifying the health and economic burden of diseases into the future. Our microsimulation-based software is used to generate evidence to quantify the impact of proposed interventions on chronic, rare and genetic diseases when scaled across the population. Such interventions include policy changes, screening, and new treatments, with a focus on predicting the impact of health behaviours on the future burden of over 20 diseases and related costs, across 80 countries.

HealthLumen works in both the public sector and also in the private sector, with global corporations in pharmaceutical, life sciences and insurance, where the value proposition can be applied in many areas. Our modelling can help evaluate the impact (clinical, social, and economic), of prevention strategies or treatments before expensive, time-consuming real-world implementation.

We have an exciting opportunity in our team for a Research Assistant/Associate with a specific focus on rare and genetic conditions. This is a remote role, however there is a requirement to come to London one day a month for our in-person company meeting where you get to meet the rest of the HealthLumen team. Travel costs will be covered if you are coming into London from around the UK. If you are traveling from abroad, we will pay your travel and accommodation costs for one night.

The responsibilities and required skills are as follows.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Carry out rapid literature reviews to understand new disease areas and the epidemiological data available
  • Creating projections and running microsimulation models
  • Using R programming to manipulate data outputs/adjust existing code
  • Collect and validate necessary risk factor and disease data from secondary sources for the technical team
  • Process and clean these data in a format suitable for the modelling programs
  • Conceptualise interventions and disease models
  • Translate quantitative results into clear messaging for clients, policy makers and other key stakeholders
  • Write up project work for publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Communicate regularly with your line manager and team regarding your progress
  • Liaise with research colleagues and staff internally as appropriate to the research project
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the job role and skillset as requested by the line manager and the business requires

Required Skills

  • An understanding of genetic epidemiology
  • High level of research skills including literature reviews, methods, basic statistics
  • High standard of report writing
  • Competency in using R
  • Use of Microsoft office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Oral presentation skills
  • Management of epidemiological and economic input and output data
  • Project management

Desirable skills/experience

  • Expert use of statistical packages such as R
  • Knowledge and use of infographic software
  • Ability to analyse large datasets

Qualifications

  • Essential: BA/BSc, plus postgraduate qualification (MSc) in (genetic) epidemiology, genetics, or a related field
  • Desirable: PhD in a related field
