Overview

Bader College, located at historic Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, is the overseas campus of Queen’s University, Canada. The campus occupies a 600-acre estate, including a range of academic, residential, and recreational facilities. Our dedicated faculty and staff provide exceptional academic programming for undergraduate and postgraduate students from Canada and around the world. Our academic department is looking for a sessional lecturer to deliver one module, REPD 372: Reproduction and Development, in the September to December academic session (“Fall 2023”). This module is part of an upper year Health Sciences program. The course description is:

In REPD 372 students will obtain a general background on various aspects of human reproduction, ranging from male and female gamete development to pregnancy and birth. The course will serve as a gateway to more advanced courses in human reproduction and development. Students will apply concepts learned through modules to a simulated case study in which a human pregnancy will be followed from the pre-conception stages to parturition and the post-partum period.

Position Details

Compensation is £4,120 for the duration of the contract, 1st August 2023 to 31st December 2023.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach REPD 372 to a small group of undergraduate students (max 30): 2 hours per week formal scheduled contact time; 2 hours of weekly office hours; all typical course-related duties and administration.
  • Develop (in collaboration with Principal Lecturer Health Studies) two field studies to help deliver the Learning Outcomes.
  • Deliver all course components using appropriate student-centric teaching methods.
  • Undertake and complete the administrative work connected with the professional delivery of teaching, including but not limited to promptly responding to communications from academic managers and administrators, setting and evaluating coursework, providing constructive and comprehensive feedback to students in a timely manner (within 14 days), maintaining an up-to-date virtual learning platform, maintaining an accurate record of student attendance, invigilating exams, marking, and submitting results for exams and other evaluations in accordance with Queen’s University academic regulations.
  • Motivate and support students by being accessible, approachable, and responsive to their communications, providing first-line support for sensitive or confidential issues, and referring students to appropriate support services as needed.
  • Ensure equal opportunities for all students, including offering additional support and resources to disadvantaged students, and proactively fostering an inclusive learning environment.

Note that the syllabus is provided, but some adjustment may be required (in collaboration with the Principal Lecturer Health Studies).

Person Specification

  • Holder of a relevant post-graduate degree in Biology, Health Studies, Health Sciences, or similar. PhD students and early career academics encouraged if they have evidence of suitable prior teaching experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of teaching and assessing undergraduate students.
  • Proven record of ability to manage time and work to strict deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Commitment to high quality teaching and creating a fully inclusive, positive learning environment.
  • Ability to pass an enhanced DBS check

Sessional Lecturers are heartily invited to:
