NIHR Clinical Lecturer in General Surgery at University of Sheffield

This NIHR Clinical Lecturer post in General Surgery has been awarded to The Medical School at The University of Sheffield as part of the prestigious UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC)/ Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) integrated academic training pathway. The post forms an integral part of the General Surgery clinical training programme led by the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Training Programme Director, Mr Artur Harikrisnan. The Academic Leads for the post are Professor Lynda Wyld, (Professor of Surgical Oncology) and Professor Steve Brown, (Honorary Professor of General Surgery), Professor Saba Balasubramanian (Honorary Professor of Endocrine Surgery) and Mr Tim Wilson, (surgical research lead at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals). This post will be focused on either breast surgery, general gastrointestinal surgery or endocrine surgery. The post will be hosted academically in the Department of Oncology and Metabolism of the University of Sheffield. Clinically it is anticipated that the candidate will spend half of their 2 year term in Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals with the option to also spend time in other centres depending on clinical preferences and needs (for example Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust or Chesterfield Royal Infirmary).

The post represents an exciting opportunity to combine clinical training in general, endocrine or breast surgery with a programme of post-doctoral research, providing 50% clinical and 50% academic time. The Postgraduate Dean has confirmed that the post has the required educational and staffing approval and will come with an Academic National Training Number [NTN(A)] as part of the South Yorkshire rotation in General Surgery. 

You will have evidence of academic achievement and will hold an MD / PhD or equivalent. You will have MRCP or equivalent and be eligible to hold an NTN, or may already hold an NTN, having undertaken some training at Specialty Registrar level. The post is aimed at an individual of ST3 level or above. 

The post is ideally suited to individuals wishing to build an academic career in surgery, and in particular those who have already undertaken research and who now wish to continue undertaking research whilst pursuing further training.
