An enthusiastic and creative team of medical educators are working within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences to develop a new School of Medicine and we are looking for a Lead for Professional Development & Student Support to join the team at this exciting time. The successful candidate will have a key role leading and coordinating the four-year longitudinal theme of student professional development for the Medical Programme, as well as helping to develop effective strategies, systems, and services to support our students.

Our innovative programme aims to produce a new type of doctor – excellent and holistic clinical leaders who can drive change, delivering integrated and technologically advanced healthcare for their patients and communities.

The role

The post holder will work within the Medical School Leadership Team to lead, develop, innovate, and maintain our professional development theme within the medical programme, ensuring the highest standards of student learning and experience. Alongside this, you will also take the lead in developing and managing support systems and services for our students, making sure that we have effective and appropriate strategies and procedures in place to allow our students to excel.

You will represent our programme by attending university boards and committees at which student-related professional issues are discussed (including issues relating to recruitment and admissions, entry and induction, student support and retention, curriculum, and organisational change) and will regularly meet with our students to update them of any changes to support facilities and procedures. You will work particularly closely with our Student Support Coordinators to ensure all our students are given appropriate advice and guidance, particularly when dealing with more complex situations.

About you

To join us at this exciting time, you will be a forward-looking individual with a ‘can do’ attitude and the ambition to drive innovation in medical education. You’ll have a higher professional qualification (usually a doctoral degree or equivalent) and a significant academic publication record. You’ll be able to demonstrate evidence of leadership in medical learning and teaching, as well as experience of course accreditation and curriculum development.

An excellent communicator, you’ll have the ability to use tact, diplomacy, and empathy to build effective working relationships at all levels. You’ll have good knowledge of student support systems for medical students, as well as knowledge of the professional requirements of the GMC, particularly in matters relating to health, disability, and fitness to practice.
