A Nigerian man has been jailed for a year over the attempted rape of an Aussie tourist in Bali last December.
According to Coconuts Bali – the leading English source of local news on the Indonesian island – the man was found guilty of the attempted rape of the unnamed female tourist by the Denpasar District Court this week.
“The defendant … is declared legally and convincingly guilty of the crime of attempted rape. The defendant is sentenced to one year in prison,” presiding judge Ida Bagus Bamadewa Patiputra said.
“The aggravating factors include clear harm to the victim and the violation of decency values. The victim suffered losses and felt violated as a woman,” prosecutor Ni Made Desi Pratiwi added.
The publication reported that the incident occurred when the pair mat at Finn Club on Berawa Beach Street in Canggu in Bali on December 2, 2022.
As the woman was leaving, the man offered to order a motorcycle taxi to take her back to her hotel – but instead, it took her to his home on Teuku Umar Street, where the attempted rape unfolded.
Thankfully, the Australian woman was able to escape and report the crime to authorities.
According to the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website, “a range of crimes, including violent crime, occur in Indonesia”, and “crimes can happen in popular tourist locations in Bali”.
It urges Australian travellers to “be aware of your surroundings, be alert in crowds and understand the potential crime risks”.
If you’re a victim of sexual assault, Australians are urged to get immediate medical assistance, to contact your nearest Australian Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia as quickly as possible and to make a full statement to local police, in person, so they can conduct a criminal investigation.
