The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy, and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

Science and health are increasingly computational disciplines: from new tools and methods in artificial intelligence, computational modelling and analysis, to policies and standards for data collection and sharing – the effective use of data and data science is central to the success of Wellcome’s strategy.

We are looking for a Head of Digital Technology – Climate and Health & Infectious Diseas, to join our team. This is a senior role, managing a team within the Data for Science and Health (DSH) Team who will primarily work on delivering our Infectious Disease and Climate and Health strategies.

In this role you will:

  • Shape, develop and drive the delivery of a program of data science and digital technology initiatives within the Discovery Research and Mental Health strategic programs, with a relentless focus on strategic clarity, efficient execution, and impact.
  • Lead, manage and motivate an integrated, inclusive and flexible team of multi-disciplinary technical experts and project officers, ensuring that people with the right range of skills and experience are recruited, retained, and used effectively.
  • Act as a senior external representative – representing Wellcome, its strategic programmes, and the DSH team at national and international levels, identifying opportunities to partner, provide leadership and to influence decision-making.
  • Be accountable to both the Directors of Discovery Research and Mental Health, and the Head of DSH. Integrate effectively into multiple leadership teams acting as a supportive peer to fellow Heads, and a trusted leader and domain expert.
  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Excellent knowledge of the current state of and trends in data & digital technologies in science and health, together with technical knowledge or training relevant to our Infectious Disease and/or Climate and Health programs.
  • An analytical and entrepreneurial approach to identifying and pursuing high-value problems related to data and digital technologies which advance a broader strategy.
  • Experience leading teams to design and execute major programs of work at pace.
  • Excellent management and people development skills

To apply please upload your current CV and complete our short application.

However, if you don’t have a CV that matches all these requirements but you are convinced you are right for the post, please do write to us to make the case.

Interview dates: Interviews are likely to take place in late August.
