The role
Bristol Vaccine Centre are seeking several enthusiastic, reliable and hard-working Research Technicians to support and supervise the laboratory processing of human samples collected in clinical trials and other clinical research projects. We study the carriage and transmission of bacteria and viruses in the upper respiratory tract, and the effects of vaccines on these, using molecular methods (polymerase chain reaction (PCR)) and microbiological (culture) techniques to detect and quantify pathogens in throat swabs, nasal swabs and saliva samples.
The successful applicant will join a busy team of approx. 20 Research Technicians who, between them, process hundreds of samples per week across several ongoing studies
What will you be doing?
- Analyse samples using high-throughput automated nucleic acid extraction and PCR equipment
- Oversight of junior technicians using the equipment.
- Induction of new staff and training others in the use of equipment, conduct of different analyses (in line with SOPs), handing of human samples, and record-keeping requirements in a clinical research context.
- Troubleshoot, resolve faults, and check results to ensure consistently high-quality outputs.
- Ensure compliance with relevant Health and Safety, ethical and other legislative or policy requirements.
- Assist with the development, optimisation and validation of new assays.
- Assist with data cleaning and/or analysis.
You should apply if
- Experience of nucleic acid extraction and PCR using high-throughput automated equipment (analysing 96 or 384-well plates of samples at a time).
- Experience of microbiological techniques (e.g. culture on agar plates, colony counting, speciation tests (Gram stain and others)).
- Experience working in a busy lab handling hundreds of samples a week.
- Experience supervising the work of others, and teaching others how to carry out laboratory techniques safely and competently in line with SOPs and Health & Safety regulations.
- Experience working with human samples is desirable.
