Project detail:

This project will assess the efficacy of polyphenol supplementation to alter nitric oxide and redox biomarkers; muscle respiration, morphology and molecular responses; cardiovascular function; and exercise capacity in healthy older adults. This project will be supervised by an interdisciplinary team to provide training in various laboratory techniques including exercise testing, flow mediated dilation, ozone-based chemiluminescence, high resolution respirometry, immunohistochemistry and western blotting.

Entry requirements:

  • An upper second class degree (or equivalent) in appropriate subject such as Sport and Exercise Science; Physiology; Nutrition/Dietetics; Biochemistry; Biosciences; or Molecular Biology
  • MSc in appropriate subject such as Sport and Exercise Science; Physiology; Nutrition/Dietetics; Biochemistry; Biosciences; or Molecular Biology
  • Experience or a working knowledge in the assessment of cardiovascular function such as flow mediated dilation
  • Experience or a working knowledge in the assessment blood biomarkers
  • Experience or a working knowledge in the assessment of skeletal muscle respiration, morphology and molecular responses using techniques such as respirometry, immunohistochemistry and western blotting
  • Experience in conducting human nutrition and exercise trials
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to critically appraise scientific methodology and data
  • Ability to work well individually and as a member of a larger research team

Funding information:

The PhD studentship is for 3 years and due to commence on 1st October 2023. The studentship provides a tax free stipend of £18,622 per annum plus tuition fees for 3 years at either UK or international student rates.
