Discipline description

The University of Exeter’s Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) programme is a five-year undergraduate programme that draws on the strength of its partnership with the NHS in Devon and Cornwall to provide a unique learning experience in healthcare for its students.

Fundamental to the training of future doctors is the emphasis that our BMBS programme places on the development of skills for lifelong learning and professional attitudes that our students will need throughout their medical career.

The role

We are seeking to appoint a new Doctors as Teachers SSU Theme Lead (Cornwall, based in Truro) who will have responsibility for leading on the forward planning, approval and training of new providers and who will have an overview of the educational provision of the SSU to Year 4 medical students based in Truro.  In addition, the theme lead will support the Academic and Clinical SSU Leads in ensuring the high quality and timely assessment of the SSU is undertaken. The Theme Lead in Cornwall will be supported in his or her role by the Doctors as Teachers Theme Lead based in Exeter and by the Academic and Clinical SSU Leads.

This is a role ideally for a clinician (fully medically qualified and with GMC registration) or a member of academic staff who has experience and interest in medical education and/or teaching.

What we can offer you:

  • Freedom (and the support) to pursue your intellectual interests and to work creatively across disciplines;
  • Support teams that understand the University wide teaching goals and partner with our academics accordingly;
  • An Innovation, Impact and Business directorate that works closely with our academics providing specialist support for external engagement and development;
  • Our Exeter Academic initiative supports high performing academics to achieve their potential and develop their career;
  • A multitude of staff benefits including sector leading benefits around maternity, adoption and shared parental leave (up to 26 weeks full pay), Paternity leave (up to 6 weeks full pay), and a Fertility Treatment Policy;
  • A beautiful campus set in the heart of stunning Cornwall.

Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Commitment

Whilst all applicants will be judged on merit alone, we particularly welcome applications from groups currently underrepresented within our working community. Reasonable adjustments are available for interviews and workplaces.

With over 30,000 students and 7,000 staff from 150 different countries we offer a diverse and engaging environment where our diversity is celebrated and valued as a major strength. We are committed to creating an inclusive culture where all members of our community are supported to thrive; where diverse voices are heard through our engagement with evidence-based charter frameworks for gender (Athena SWAN and Project Juno for Physics), race equality (Race Equality Charter Mark), LGBTQ+ inclusion (Stonewall Diversity Champion) and as a Disability Confident employer.
