A suburban Chicago man who held firearms training classes accidentally shot and killed his wife while cleaning his gun — then took his own life, according to police.
Simeon Hendrickson, 61, was working on one of his guns at his home on Dalton Lane in Bollingbrook on Saturday afternoon when it accidentally discharged and the bullet struck his wife, Laurie Hendrickson, 60, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife died at a local hospital, cops added.
It was unclear if Simeone called 911, or if one of his neighbours heard the gunfire and called for help, ABC 7 reported.
In a statement, police said: “Upon arrival … A 61-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene. A 60-year-old female was transported to an area hospital for treatment.”
A later update from police read: “The preliminary investigation has indicated Simeon S Hendrickson, 61, of Bolingbrook, was working on one of his handguns in his residence when it accidentally discharged and the round struck his wife, Laurie J Hendrickson, 60, of Bolingbrook.”
His Facebook page indicates that he was a gun enthusiast who taught firearms training.
Their son grieved their loss in a Facebook post. “They were loved and respected by many and were the greatest parents anyone could have ever ask for,” Derek Hendrickson wrote, according to People.
According to public posts on Hendrickson‘s Facebook page, he taught concealed carry classes at a suburban Chicago facility.
There were 549 accidental gun deaths in the US in 2021, the most recent year for which complete data is available, according to the Pew Research Center.
