Research Technician at University of Birmingham

Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK

Full Time / Fixed Term contract up to 29 February 2024

We are looking for a research technician to assist in an exciting project exploring the link between gum disease and chronic kidney disease. These two diseases are both inflammatory in nature and detecting both diseases early means that patients are treated earlier and with less burden of disease to them.

You will be helping with preparation of samples that have been collected from patients and that are stored in our biobank. You will need to have skills in saliva preparation and management of biobank records. In addition, there will be a requirement for you to be involved in data entry of information from the clinical report form and advancement of assays with primary neutrophils isolated from patients.

Job summary

You will provide technical expertise, support and guidance in research support.  You may supervise a number of technical staff but even where you do not directly supervise staff you will still be expected to act as a role model and coach others as appropriate.

You will need an in-depth understanding of the research questions, techniques and experimental protocols.  You will be able to use your in-depth knowledge to advise on procedures, diagnose and resolve problems, and proactively suggest solutions to issues which arise.  You may need to operate out of normal working hours to accommodate experimental procedures.

In order to flexibly use resource you may be offered the opportunity to work in different areas of the department or wider university.
