We wish to recruit a Clinical Research Fellow (CRF) in Endocrinology to provide support for the MRC funded LIONNS-D2 study – a phase 2b randomised controlled trial (RCT) of a new long acting T3 called T3 sulphate (T3S), in hypothyroid subjects with the Thr92Ala single nucleotide polymorphism – MRC grant MR/X013170/1. The post will be based at University Hospital of Wales, Heath Park Campus.
The LIONNS-D2 study
This study examines the efficacy of T3S in treating persistent symptoms and a poor quality of life (QoL) in hypothyroid subjects taking LT4 alone (10-15% of them). Evidence suggests that these symptoms and poor QoL are related to a lack of T3 at a tissue level. Although it would seem intuitive to add LT3 to their LT4 monotherapy, current T3 preparations do not provide a physiological mechanism. Long acting T3S would provide a more “stable” T3 environment facilitating peripheral T3 replenishment and improvement in symptoms and QoL. We will undertake a cross over trial of LT4+T3S combination therapy comparing it to LT4+placebo. We will recruit subjects with the D2 polymorphism as they have the largest symptom burden and respond best to LT3 replacement. The primary outcome would be symptom and QoL related but secondary outcomes would involve measuring, resting energy expenditure, bone markers, body composition using DEXA technology, metabolomic sampling, thyroid hormone day profiles coupled with interstitial fluid analysis.
The successful candidate will be part of a large research team with proven research skills and a strong track record in thyroid research. They will have the MRCP (UK)/MRCP (Endocrinology) or their equivalent, and experience in Endocrinology and thyroid disease. They should be highly motivated, organised and have excellent communication skills. They will also be expected to register for a higher degree (PhD/MD) if not already in possession of one.
Training will be provided in clinical research, Good Clinical Practice and analytical skills.

This post is full time (40 hours per week), fixed term until 30th April 2026 and is available immediately.
Salary: £37,496 – £64,920 per annum (Clinical Grade D1). Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.
