Border Crossings: Charity and voluntarism in Britain’s mixed economy of healthcare since 1948

We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for our Wellcome Trust Collaborative Award, ‘Border Crossings: Charity and voluntarism in Britain’s mixed economy of healthcare since 1948’. The postholder will work with Professor Martin Gorsky over the next 16 months on the history of charity within the NHS hospital sector in London and the UK.  They will also collaborate closely with members of the project team at the Universities of Birmingham, Edinburgh and Strathclyde.  The role will include inter alia: archival research with primary sources; oral history; participation in organising project events, and working with our advisory group. 

Essential criteria for the role include: a doctoral degree in history, social policy or a cognate social science discipline; knowledge of the history of public health and social welfare in Britain since 1948; experience of relevant archival and oral history research methods; evidence of publications, preferably peer-reviewed; and ability and willingness to travel to archives in different parts of the UK. The post is available from 4 September 2023 and will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale Grade 6 in the range £42,875 – £43,748 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff, and there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London.
