Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor in endemic, enzootic and emerging infectious diseases at University of Bristol

The role

Bristol Veterinary School is seeking to appoint an exciting and dynamic researcher in the field of Global Disease Challenges who will play a pivotal role in addressing the complex challenges posed by current and future infectious diseases and will contribute to the significant advancement of public health, animal welfare, and scientific knowledge. Moreover, the position is expected to expand upon our existing research strengths in the field of infectious diseases and contribute to our key research themes of Global Food Security and Population Health. We particularly welcome applications from researchers in the fields relevant to pandemics, epidemics, zoonotics, and panzootics; and working with diseases associated with viruses, prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The appointee will work alongside researchers in diverse fields including immunology, parasitology, virology, vaccinology, microbiology, structural biology, One Health and antimicrobial resistance, vector-borne diseases and microbiomes. Outside the Veterinary School, the Schools of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Biochemistry, Medicine and Chemistry have nationally and internationally recognised research groups working in animal and human infectious diseases, providing a rich environment for collaboration.

To achieve these goals, the successful applicant is expected to develop and lead a funded research program in one or more of the relevant fields of pandemics, epidemics, zoonotics, and panzootics. This includes securing external funding from prestigious sources such as UKRI and the Wellcome Trust, enabling the necessary resources to drive their ground-breaking research and innovation.

The successful applicant will need to contribute to the educational programs and training initiatives run by Bristol Veterinary School as well as engage with administrative duties, to help with the effective operation of the school.

The post is based on the University of Bristol’s Langford campus, within the Faculty of Health Sciences.

What will you be doing?

Appointees will demonstrate and provide exceptional leadership skills, enhancing the existing research and educational programs within the Bristol Veterinary School. Moreover, the appointee will be expected to develop cross disciplinary collaborations with the existing research groups within BVS and research groupings within the wider University and affiliated Institutes. Appointees will support university and institutional initiatives as well as develop their research programs through external funding, supervise and mentor postgraduate students and contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in relevant subject areas on one or more of our Veterinary Science BVSc (incl. Accelerated Graduate Entry Programme), Veterinary Nursing and Companion Animal Behaviour BSc, and Global Wildlife Health & Conservation MSc programmes.

Applicants should be recognised nationally and internationally for excellence in their research programme in infectious diseases and have an interest in using interdisciplinary approaches to identifying novel, high impact solutions. Consistent with the level of appointment, applicants must have a PhD and an established, independent track record in research, as evidenced by successful acquisition of competitive grant funding and strong publication history of peer reviewed research outputs.
