We have an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join the Clinical Sciences team in Liverpool.

Primarily the successful candidate will be required to support the design, delivery, and evaluation of person-centred mixed methods TB research, including related to addressing the social determinants of TB and evaluating TB diagnostic test combinations, within two large research consortia:  LIGHT (Leaving no-one behind: transforming Gendered pathways to Health for TB) and Start4All (Start taking action for TB diagnosis).

LIGHT is a cross-disciplinary global health research programme funded by UK aid, led by LSTM working with partners in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda and the UK. LIGHT aims to provide new evidence on the effectiveness of different gender-responsive pathways and approaches to health for those with TB in urban settings. The initiative will contribute to improved health, socio-economic and equity outcomes and efforts to stop the spread of TB.

The Unitaid-funded Start4All Project is a $13 million LSTM-led research consortium working with partners in Bangladesh, Brazil, Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, and Vietnam. Start4All aims to increase TB detection through equitable access to optimised TB diagnostic test combinations.

The post-holder will initially work across both consortia with 40% of working time allocated to LIGHT and 60% allocated to Start4All consortia.

Key responsibilities are (but not limited to):

  • Support the design of effective integrated strategies for the sustainable, acceptable, and affordable case detection, care and treatment of TB 
  • Work collaboratively to support on-going social determinant health systems research
  • Preparing and facilitating workshops  
  • Develop a shared bibliography resource and update with relevant literature relating to the social determinants and consequences of TB, and combinations of TB diagnostics
  • Carry out other tasks relevant to the post including where necessary policy briefs and communications 
  • Support with the delivery of the LIGHT capacity strengthening and safeguarding strategies
  • Manage and lead key informant interviews, focus group discussions and participatory workshops and disseminate the information to all stakeholders

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team. You will have well-developed research skills with the ability to effectively present research findings in oral and written format. You will also demonstrate:

  • PhD in a health or health-related science discipline
  • Experience in working in health, development or implementation in low-income countries
  • Experience in conducting implementation research, and research in the social sciences, health economics, and international health  
  • Experience of working on research into the social determinants and consequences of health
  • Experience in academic paper writing/evidence of published paper authorship and international presentations
  • Understanding of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods study design, data collection, and data analysis
