Consistently ranked among Canada’s top research-intensive universities, Simon Fraser University (SFU) is a world leader in research, knowledge development, and sustainability. SFU forges lasting partnerships that enhance the social, economic, and cultural well-being of the communities they serve. They equip students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences that prepare them for life in an ever-changing and challenging world. And with more than 180,000 alumni around the world, SFU’s work and impact can be seen in all corners of the globe. With vibrant campuses in British Columbia’s three largest cities—Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver—SFU is not just shaping minds, they are also shaping communities.

SFU is establishing B.C.’s second medical school, with the goal of training physicians who will help address B.C.’s chronic shortage of primary care physicians. SFU is seeking to build a medical program that will take a focused approach to training graduates who will work in team-based primary care settings that are patient-centred and socially accountable. The medical program will be rooted in the university’s strengths in community engagement and strong partnerships with the First Nations Health Authority, the Fraser Health Authority, other provincial health authorities and the practice community. First Nations, Inuit and Métis knowledge systems and perspectives will be embedded throughout the program, including reciprocity, cultural safety, and humility.

The Dean, SFU Medical School, (“Dean”) who reports to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, and indirectly to the President and Vice-Chancellor, will provide academic leadership, administrative management and strategic direction for the creation and operationalization of SFU’s medical school. The Dean will establish SFU’s medical school in alignment with the strategic vision and mission of the university to meet the needs of the people of British Columbia.

The Dean will be responsible for the development, implementation and operationalization of the medical school and medical program, including budget and fund development, curriculum development, faculty recruitment, accreditation, and advancement. The Dean will ensure high-quality education, robust research programs and activities, and exceptional scholarship, teaching and service across undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in the school and more broadly across the university, and will foster an environment in which students, faculty and staff thrive.

As a member of the university’s senior academic team, the Dean will provide dynamic leadership to establish, maintain and promote the strengths of the school, and to ensure strong, productive relationships with other faculties, institutions, health authorities, the medical and health community, governments, and other public and professional authorities. The Dean will work directly with the President and Provost to ensure SFU is an effective academic leader in health in order to meet the health needs of the population the school serves and beyond.

Simon Fraser University respectfully acknowledges the unceded traditional territories, including the Semiahmoo, Katzie, kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), Kwantlen, Qayqayt, and Tsawwassen Nations, on which SFU Surrey is located.

SFU encourages applications from all qualified individuals, including women, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, people of all sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of the university.
