The Health and Social Care Data-Driven Innovation programme at the Usher Institute within The University of Edinburgh is looking for a Teaching Fellow to join our Teaching Organisation, within the Deanery of Molecular, Genetic and Population Health Sciences. They will apply their teaching expertise, in data science in the context of health and social care, to support our growing portfolio of education and training opportunities, providing new data capability for the health and social care sector.

The opportunity:

You will be part of the vibrant Deanery Teaching Organisation, which is embedded in the Usher Institute and the wider Edinburgh Medical School. We have 500+ students, from more than 50 nationalities, study with us on our on-campus and online postgraduate programmes, including: Master of Public Health, Master of Family Medicine, MSc Clinical Trials, MSc Epidemiology, MSc Data Science for Health and Social Care, MSc Leading Digital Transformation in Health and Care for Scotland, PGCert Global Health Challenges. We also have a growing student community studying on our continuing professional development (CPD) courses in data science.

As a Teaching Fellow you will contribute to the development and ongoing refinement of online teaching content in data science for health and social care. You will deliver online teaching, assessment marking and support to learners studying the DDI Health and Social Care Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) courses.  A key purpose of the role is to teach content that stimulates discussion; debate and peer supported learning in order to further the understanding of key course topics. A critical element is assisting participants in drawing key learning points and practical applications of the course materials and reflecting on how these relate to own practice.  You will be required to liaise directly with both learners and course organisers in order to provide responsive and high-quality teaching and learning support. You will also contribute to occasional on campus learning and teaching events by meeting and engaging with participants -online or face to face- to enhance the teaching and support experience for participants, as required.

Your skills and attributes for success: 

  •     Relevant teaching experience at postgraduate/undergraduate or continuing professional development level
    •   Knowledge of R, Python and/or other relevant programming language(s)
    •   Ability to design and deliver course materials and assess learner performance
    •   Experience in teaching relevant subjects (computer science/data science/health and social care) strongly advantageous.
    •   Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills in a range of contexts
